City of Renton Seeks Volunteer Input on Minimum Wage Increase

Input needed to draft pro/con statements should initiative go to public vote

RENTON, WA (November 22, 2023) – Following the City Council meeting on Monday, November 20, 2023, a public notice has been published seeking volunteers to serve on a Pro/Con Committee to address the potential positive and negative impacts of an ordinance that would increase the minimum wage in the City of Renton. Three volunteers are needed for the issue's pro and con sides.

Renton Initiative Measure No. 23-02 would create a minimum wage increase based on the City of Tukwila’s voter-approved minimum wage; create regulations about when hours must be offered to part-time employees before making new hires or subcontracting work; and create rules against retaliation and penalties and civil causes of action for violations.

This is a voter-initiated measure, meaning the ordinance could either be adopted by the Renton City Council, or sent out for a public vote in the February 13, 2024, Special Election. If the issue goes to a public vote, the pro and con committees will draft statements in support or opposition of the proposed ordinance. These would appear in the King County Elections voters’ pamphlet to assist voters with fully understanding the issue. Drafting these pro and con statements must be completed no later than December 19, 2023.

The committees are limited to three named individuals each, but committees may seek the advice of others. For appointment to a committee, residents, employees or business owners in the City of Renton are preferred.

Anyone interested in applying for the pro or con committees can submit an application or call 425-430-6502 to be sent the application form. The deadline to submit the form is 4 p.m. on November 29, 2023. The form can be found at this link: Pro/Con Committee Application Form.
