Councilmember Ed Prince Elected to Serve as 2024 Renton City Council President
Councilmember James Alberson, Jr. to serve as President Pro-Tem
RENTON, WA (December 13, 2023) – At the regular Renton City Council meeting on Monday, November 20, 2023, Councilmember Ed Prince was elected to serve in the position of City Council President for 2024.
As Council President, Prince will set the agenda and conduct Committee of the Whole meetings that precede a full city council meeting. Councilmember Prince will begin his fourth four-year term on Council and currently serves as chair of the Planning & Development Committee.
Earlier this year, Councilmember Prince earned the Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership for completing more than 60 hours of training and demonstrated local community service. Prince has previously served as Council President twice, making this his third year-long term of service in the leadership role.
Prince also serves as the Executive Director of the Washington State Commission on African American Affairs, on the Association of Washington Cities Board of Directors, is a member of the Sound Transit Board of Directors and Sound Cities Association, co-chairs the King County Regional Homeless Authority, and is chair of the Puget Sound Regional Council Growth Management Policy Board.
Councilmember Prince will take over the president’s duties from Councilmember Valerie O’Halloran, who served in the role for 2023.
Councilmember James Alberson, Jr. has been elected to serve as President Pro-Tem for the 2024 calendar year. The President Pro-Tem runs the meeting in the President’s absence. This marks the first time the Renton City Council will have an African-American Council President and President Pro-Tem.
Both Councilmember Prince and Councilmember Alberson begin their roles in January 2024.
