RENTON, WA (AUGUST 8, 2023) – City of Renton Councilmember Ryan McIrvin has earned a Certificate of Municipal Leadership (CML) from the Association of Washington Cities (AWC). Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone presented the certificate at Monday’s regularly scheduled Renton City Council meeting.

“Congratulations to Councilmember McIrvin for earning this distinction,” said Mayor Pavone. “This achievement reflects his strong desire to serve our residents above and beyond his normal councilmember duties.”

AWC’s Certificate of Municipal Leadership program recognizes city- and town-elected officials. Councilmember McIrvin was awarded the certificate after completing more than 30 hours of training and attending at least one workshop in each of the 5 competency areas:

  • Roles, responsibilities, and legal requirements

  • Public sector resource management

  • Community planning and development

  • Effective local leadership

  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion

"I am honored to have earned my Certificate of Municipal Leadership. This achievement demonstrates a commitment to serving our community with dedication and expertise to better advocate for the needs of our residents,” said McIrvin.

Councilmember McIrvin is serving his second four-year term on the city council, first winning the election for Position Four in November 2015. He served as Council President in 2022 and currently chairs the Transportation Committee, vice-chairs the Planning & Development Committee, and is a member of the Utilities Committee.

He is the Assistant Director of Government and Community Relations at the University of Washington Bothell.

“Being a city leader in Washington is a complex job,” said AWC CEO Deanna Dawson. “Through our CML program, we are providing our elected officials with the knowledge they need to effectively operate within the law, plan for the future, secure and manage funds, foster strong relationships, and work to build more equitable communities.”

Councilmember McIrvin joins Mayor Armondo Pavone and Councilmember Kim-Khánh Văn in earning the certificate of municipal leadership. Councilmembers Ruth Pérez, Valerie O’Halloran, and Ed Prince have also earned the Advanced Certificate of Municipal Leadership.
