The City of Renton provides utility locate services and is a member of Washington 8-1-1, more commonly known as, “Call before you dig.”
The Utility Locate Section is staffed with three full-time locators, who are responsible for locating the following utility services:
- Drinking (potable) water
- Sewer
- Storm water
- Street lighting
- City-owned fiber optics
- City-owned power
- Communication systems for water and sewer
Key to the utility locate markings:
- White – Proposed excavation site
- Pink – Temporary survey markings
- Red – Electric power lines, cables, conduit and lighting cables
- Yellow – Gas, oil, steam, petroleum or gaseous materials
- Orange – Communication, alarm or signal lines, cables or conduit
- Blue – Potable water
- Purple – Reclaimed water, irrigation and slurry lines
- Green – Sewer and drain lines
When requesting locator services the following information is required:
- Address or nearest intersection
- Name of person or company p.
- Performing the work
- Type of work
- White paint to mark the proposed excavation location
- Date and time of the proposed excavation
- Best call back phone number
Requests are responded to within 48 hours for non-emergency locator services and within two hours for emergency situations.
The Utility Locate Services averages 26 locates per day. In 2016 this division conducted 5,373 locates and 6,542 in 2017.
