Greeters serve as front desk ambassadors for the museum on Saturdays. Greeters work in pairs in three-hour shifts from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm or 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm. They open the museum, welcome visitors, collect admissions, sell gift shop items, provide information, and close the museum.

To work as a Greeter, you must have excellent people skills and be able to conduct financial transactions accurately. Greeters are expected to volunteer at least once a month and to commit to at least six months of service. We are currently most in need of this volunteer position since they run the museum every Saturday. This is a great position if you are looking for a regular commitment or need to fulfill a certain number of community service hours in a set amount of time.

Docents provide tours to the public, school groups, and other organizations that schedule visits to the museum. Tours are scheduled upon request and will usually take place during regular museum hours. Docents must be enthusiastic public speakers with a working knowledge of all museum exhibits. Docents can work with visitors of all ages, so an ability to customize material to different age groups is required.

Docents are expected to commit to at least a year of service. Because tours are only given on request, this position does not have a regular schedule. Extra training hours beyond the position orientation are required for Docents to master the subject matter of the museum’s exhibits. 

Oral History volunteers work independently outside the museum building to interview influential Renton citizens and collect their stories for the museum’s archive. Museum staff members select candidates to be interviewed and pass along contact information and basic biographical info to the Oral History Team. The Oral History Volunteers develop appropriate questions, then arrange and conduct interviews with the candidates at a time and place that works best for both parties.

If you are between the ages of 13 and 18, the Renton History Museum wants YOU to help us make the museum a place where you would want to hang out.
