The regional increase in catalytic converter thefts are a nuisance and can be costly for those who are targeted for this prolific property crime. We encourage our community members to be proactive with crime prevention measures to help reduce the chance of being victimized by this frustrating crime.
In an effort to hinder the ease at which catalytic converter thieves are trading or selling these for profit, Renton Police Department has initiated CATCON, a crime prevention program that encourages community members to engrave the last 8 digits of their Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) on their catalytic converter and highlight the number with high temperature paint. If your converter is stolen, reported, and recovered, law enforcement can track it to the owner and potentially solve the crime.
You may want to check with your preferred automotive service location to see if they are taking appointments for engraving catalytic converters, or inquire if they will include this service in with your regularly scheduled appointment.
