City has eight pre-approved ADU plans and is waiving or reducing associated fees

RENTON, WA – The City of Renton will host an online open house to introduce its much anticipated Permit Ready Accessory Dwelling Unit (PRADU) Program to Renton residents on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m.to 12 p.m.

Drawing of an ADU modelThe open house will provide an overview of the PRADU program, including the application process and eligibility requirements. Staff will showcase the completed PRADU designs for the first time. There will also be the opportunity to answer questions. Anyone unable to attend the Zoom meeting and having questions can email [email protected].

“As the demand for viable housing options grows, ADUs are an exciting option,” said Chip Vincent, the city’s Community & Economic Development Administrator. “By encouraging this type of infill development, we’re promoting housing stability while efficiently using the city’s existing assets. We have established an efficient process with pre-approved building plans and have waived or reduced most fees. These steps will save applicants a significant amount of time and money.”

The city contracted with an architectural firm to develop eight base plans, of varying architectural styles, that were designed to complement the existing housing fabric found throughout Renton, including contemporary, Victorian, craftsman, rambler, etc. The base plans were designed to meet diverse housing needs and be energy efficient, affordable, and ADA accessible. All have been pre-approved by the Building Division, which allows for expedited review and permit issuance.

The models range from approximately 418 to 1,000 square feet and are designed complete with a kitchen, sleeping area, and bathroom facilities. All models include 1, 2, and 3 bedroom options.

The city has waived most fees associated with building permit application and review, as well as impact fees for transportation, fire, parks, and school impact for those ADUs built within the Renton School District.
