Renton police officers engage in extra duty employment when government, commercial, or non-profit entities request additional law enforcement services, above and beyond what is provided by the department on a daily basis.
Examples of extra duty services may include:
- Private business security
- Traffic control and pedestrian safety
- Crowd control
- Sporting event security
- Special event security
Officers working extra duty positions are able to exercise full police powers and the employment is scheduled in a manner that does not conflict or interfere with the police department’s primary mission.
The organization requesting an extra duty police officer reimburses the City of Renton for the officer's wages and associated equipment expenses.
