CERT Spring 2024 Classes

Help the community when disaster strikes by participating in the Spring 2024 Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) classes.

CERT teaches how to prepare for and respond to disasters. Topics include personal preparedness, first aid, fire suppression, search and rescue, terrorism, and team organization.

During the eight-week course, participants will be involved in classroom and practical "hands-on" training. CERT graduates can serve as neighborhood "first responders" during the critical period after a disaster when existing resources are overwhelmed.

CERT will be held at Renton Regional Fire Authority Fire Station #14 starting Thursday, April 18, from 6-9 p.m. for eight weeks. The final drill is Saturday, June 1, from 7:30 a.m.- 1 p.m.

Register by April 16 at rentonwa.gov/register using the keyword “Emergency”.

Developmental Disabilities Awareness Month in Renton proclamation celebrated

During the council meeting, Mayor Pavone issued a proclamation designating March as Developmental Disabilities Month in Renton. Accepting the proclamation was the city’s Adaptive Recreation Coordinator, Steven Kurtz. In the audience, several active Adaptive Recreation participants joined in on the celebration and the acceptance of the proclamation.

“We are so proud and grateful for the residents we have in here tonight. They are beautiful people who choose Renton for their social and recreational programming.” - Maryjane Van Cleave, Parks and Recreation Administrator.

As part of programming offered by the Parks and Recreation Department, Adaptive Recreation has been providing persons with disabilities in Renton a variety of inclusive recreational opportunities as well as adaptive programs for all ages for many years.

“I am very proud of our Adaptive Recreation Program in Renton, and I am eternally grateful to all the participants and their families that not only made it out tonight but continue to make it to our programs regularly.” - Steven Kurtz, Adaptive Recreation Coordinator.

National Developmental Disabilities Month is recognized during the month of March to raise awareness about the support and rights of people with disabilities and to celebrate their contributions to our society.

Black River Cultural Arts Center grand opening

Grand opening of the Black River Cultural Arts Center

Last week, a new art space in downtown Renton opened its doors. The Black River Cultural Arts Center held its grand opening on Thursday, March 14, at its new location connected to the city parking garage at 204 Logan Ave. S.

Black River Cultural Arts Center has been inhabiting this new arts lounge space in partnership with the Renton Arts Commission for the past few months but has now officially made its residence permanent.

CreNative Designz, led by artist Tommy Segundo, fosters artistic expression and community engagement, highlighting works of art inspired by his Indigenous heritage, belonging to both the Haida and Katzie First Nation tribes. In addition, the space will be used for community programming, such as drum-making classes, and educational opportunities, including language classes.

This partnership creates a lively space where residents can gather, connect, and support the intersection of arts, culture, and community.
