City of Renton awarded over $6 million to control flooding

King County Flood Control District and the Washington State Department of Ecology provide funding

RENTON, WA ¬ The City of Renton has been awarded $6.15 million in grant funding from the King County Flood Control District and the Washington State Department of Ecology for projects and programs to help reduce flooding and remove pollution from stormwater runoff to protect surface water quality.

The flood control district approved a $5 million funding agreement for the Cedar River Section 205 Levees Accreditation Project, which covers the lower 1.25 miles of the Cedar River. The levees were built by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and protect portions of downtown Renton, Boeing’s 737 plant, and the Renton Municipal Airport from the 100-year flood. Section 205 consists of levees and floodwalls along both banks of the river, a channel deepened by dredging and outfalls fitted with tide flex valves. The project was started in June 1998.

The Madsen Creek Flood Reduction Project will receive $635,000 from the district’s Capital Improvement Program to reduce the risk of flooding from Madsen Creek in the area of SR-169 and 149th Avenue SE.

The Washington State Department of Ecology awarded the city grants totaling $515,000 for three projects. The grants will fund a study to increase stormwater storage capacity, design and replace existing systems, and implement requirements included in the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System Municipal Stormwater Permit that takes effect on August 1, 2019.
