Filing a claim for damages

If you believe that the City is responsible for damages to you or your property:

1. You must file a written claim.

2. In order to meet legal requirements you must supply specific information. To assist you in meeting those requirements, the city has prepared a Claim form for your use.

3. Please include documentation (if you have them) such as receipts, photographs of the damage and photographs of the hazard.

4. Completed claims should be emailed to cityclerk@rentonwa.gov, or mailed to the City Clerk's Office along with copies of invoices, receipts or photos documenting your damages. NOTE: City Hall is CLOSED in accordance with the Governor's Phases and is not accepting in-person delivery of claims at this time.

5. A copy of your claim will be sent to Risk Management at City Hall.

6. Risk Management is responsible for assigning your claim to the City's third party adjusting company in a timely manner.

7. The claims adjuster will investigate your claim and determine if the City is legally responsible for your damages and, if so, for how much.

8. Generally, the City will only pay for damages when it can be shown that the City was negligent in its operations.

You will receive written notice of action taken on your claim within 45 days after it was filed. The City's goal is to exceed this expectation and communicate with you regarding your claim as soon as possible.
