RENTON, WA – Renton Mayor Armondo Pavone has appointed Police Chief Ed VanValey as the city’s interim Chief Administrative Officer and Deputy Chief of Police Jon Schuldt as interim police chief. Both appointments will take effect on Dec. 1, 2020.

“I’m also very pleased to have someone of Jon’s experience and leadership to take over as police chief. Our department has a well-earned reputation for its dedication, professionalism, and respect when dealing with our community. These ideals will continue under Jon’s leadership."

Ed VanValey

VanValey is a native of Renton, a graduate of Lindbergh High School and a member of the Renton Police Department since 1998. He was promoted to sergeant in 2008, commander in 2012, deputy chief in 2013, and sworn in as chief on Oct. 3, 2018. He is a graduate of Central Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and Justice.

The chief administrative officer reports to the mayor and serves as a liaison between the administration and city council. His administrative duties involve directing, coordinating and facilitating city projects, programs and policies, and reviewing and making recommendations on complex personnel and performance issues, policy interpretations and resource allocation.

Photo of Jon SchuldtSchuldt is a native of Aberdeen and graduated from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology. He joined Renton Police Department as a patrol officer in 1995 and joined the K-9 Unit in 1999.

In 2006 he earned a promotion to sergeant in the patrol division. In 2011 he was assigned to supervise the special enforcement team. Schuldt earned a promotion to Commander of the North Sector in 2014 and to deputy chief in January 2018.
